Complementary Advantages of International Trade of AgriculturalProducts and Cultural Tourism Development of Tea Industry inPuchuan Township, Tengchong
Puchuan Township of Tengchong is located on the western foot ofGaoligong Mountain, which is a core tea-producing area with a longhistory in western Yunnan. As a landmark local agriculturalproduct, alpine ecological tea boasts strong potential forinternational trade. The local cultural tourism industry and teatrade complement and empower each other deeply, forming a sounddevelopment pattern of "tea foreign trade as the economicfoundation and cultural tourism as the value-added engine". It hasbecome a core approach for industrial upgrading and opening-up inPuchuan Township.
Puchuan tea has multiple core competitive edges forinternational trade. Firstly, it owns a superior ecologicalplanting environment. Most tea gardens are distributed in mistymountain areas at an altitude of 1400 to 2000 meters. Selenium-richvolcanic soil, mild subtropical monsoon climate and high forestcoverage form a natural barrier against pests, so pesticides andchemical fertilizers are rarely used. The tea naturally meetsorganic export standards and is highly competitive in SoutheastAsian and South Asian markets. Dominated by large-leaved ancienttree tea, ecological green tea and black tea, Puchuan tea featuresmellow taste, sweet aftertaste and rich aroma, matching overseasdemand for high-end original ecological tea drinks. Secondly, itsproduct forms are suitable for cross-border trade. Processed intobulk raw tea, compressed Pu'er tea cakes, premium tea bags and giftboxes, Puchuan tea enjoys stable storage, long shelf life and ismuch more suitable for long-distance transportation than freshagricultural products. Benefiting from Yunnan’s geographicalproximity to Southeast Asia and RCEP trade policies, customsclearance and tariff costs are greatly reduced. Thirdly, theindustrial foundation is mature. Puchuan has formed a completeindustrial chain including tea garden management, primaryprocessing, intensive packaging and brand traceability. Local teaenterprises can stably supply bulk foreign trade orders, withflexible business modes covering both bulk raw material export andhigh-end customized tea gift overseas sales.
Tea international trade and cultural tourism are highlycomplementary and mutually reinforcing, reflected in fouraspects.
First, complementary customer markets. Foreign trade targetsoverseas B2B merchants and consumers, while cultural tourismattracts domestic tourists and tea culture research groups. The twomarkets expand overall tea sales without conflict.Tourist-purchased tea souvenirs gain higher added value, whileforeign trade realizes large-scale sales, optimizing overallindustrial income.
Second, upgraded complementary products. Pure foreign trademainly relies on raw tea and standardized finished products withlimited added value, while cultural tourism develops tea-themedcultural creations, tea mountain research experiences, intangibleheritage tea-making workshops, handmade tea utensils and teamountain homestays, turning tea culture into tangible tourismconsumption products. Meanwhile, brand popularity raised by tourismimproves the bargaining power of Puchuan tea in internationaltrade.
Third, shared industrial chain resources. Tea gardens serve bothproduction bases and core scenic spots; tea trails and workshopsare shared for dual purposes, cutting infrastructure costs.Logistics, warehousing and cross-border e-commerce resources forforeign trade also support online sales of tourism specialties, forming dual domestic and overseas sales channels.
Fourth, joint brand IP building. Puchuan builds a regionalpublic brand of "Alpine Mist Tea Town". International trade spreadsbrand influence globally, while cultural tourism delivers immersivecultural experience, helping overseas buyers recognize both teaproducts and local cultural IP to secure long-term tradecooperation.
The integrated development of tea foreign trade and culturaltourism has transformed Puchuan’s extensive model relying merely onraw tea export. In the future, Puchuan will promote organic teaexport certification and build tea cultural tourism routes, combining ecological tea foreign trade, tea tourism and teacultural creations. Relying on geographical advantages, it willexpand markets across Southeast Asia and the world, raise tea addedvalue through cultural tourism soft power, and turn ecologicaladvantages into dual economic strengths of international trade andrural tourism, realizing sustainable high- industrialdevelopment and boosting opening-up and rural revitalization ofborder towns.
