This European Standard specifies methods of determining theluminous and solar characteristics of glazing in buildings. Thesecharacteristic can serve as a basis for lighting, heating andcooling calcations of rooms and permit comparison between differenttypes of glazing. This European Standard applies both toconventional glazing and to absorbing or reflecting solar-controlglazing, used as vertical or horizontal glazed apertures. Theappropriate formae for single, double and triple glazing are given.This European Standard is accordingly applicable to all transparentmaterials except those which show significant transmission in thewavelength region 5 μm to 50 μm of ambient temperature radiation,such as certain plastic materials. Materials with light-scatteringproperties for incident radiation are dealt with as conventionaltransparent materials subject to certain conditions (see 5.2).Angar light and solar properties of glass in building are excludedfrom this Standard. However, research work in this area issummarised in E.1, E.2 and E.3. While this European Standardpresents the formae for the exact calcations of the spectralcharacteristics of glazing, it does not consider the uncertainty ofthe measurements necessary to determine the spectral parametersthat are used in the calcations. It shod be noted that, for simpleglazing systems where few measurements are required, theuncertainty of the rests will be satisfactory if correctmeasurements procedures have been followed. When the glazingsystems become complex and a large number of measurements arerequired to determine the spectral parameters, the uncertainty iscumative with the number of measurements and shod be considered inthe final rests. The term interface used in this European Standard,is considered to be a surface characterized by its transmission andreflections of light intensities.
